A journal that respects your money
Velvetta is an independent publication about clothing, jewellery, cosmetics and the long business of looking after things. We publish long articles with numbers in them.

Why this exists
Most writing about fashion and beauty is either commerce in disguise or vibe with no substance. The gap sits in the middle: genuinely useful, specific, unhurried explanation that assumes you are intelligent and busy. That is what we try to publish.
Every article here is built around a decision you actually have to make — which coat, what carat, how much niacinamide, whether to dry-clean that. We lead with the decision, then give you the criteria, the numbers, and the trade-offs. Where the evidence is weak, we say so.
How we work
Our writers come from buying offices, ateliers, gemmological labs, cosmetics formulation and dermatology clinics. Drafts are fact-checked against primary sources: standards documents, mill specifications, peer-reviewed literature, lab reports. Anything we have not personally handled is marked as such.
- We state measurable criteria — fabric weight in grams per metre, fill power, nacre thickness in millimetres, actives in percent.
- We give price bands and say plainly when a premium is branding rather than construction.
- We name what we would not buy, and at what budget the upgrade stops being worth it.
- Medical-adjacent content carries an explicit boundary: here is what self-care covers, here is where you need a clinician.
What we will not do
No gift-guide listicles assembled from press releases. No sponsored placements inside editorial. No “must-have” language. No affiliate links that change what we recommend. When a brand sends something, we either return it or disclose it.
Corrections
We correct openly. If you find an error in a number, a standard or a claim, write to us and we will fix the article and record the change at the foot of the page.
